Baby Blues and Postpartum

Ways to combat Baby Blues after having a baby and how to help if you have it.

If you haven't yet go back and read the Blog on Baby Blues and Pregnancy. I don't want to get too repetitive here so I will touch on things already mentioned previously.

Okay, your baby has arrived, you are sitting at home trying to recover. You look down, maybe you feel like you aren't connected to the little bundle in your arms "like everyone said you are", or you're crying uncontrollably. What is going on? You probably have the Baby Blues or Postpartum Depression. This is common and normal. There are a lot of reasons for this. Hormones, things being out of your control and other reasons can play into this. Basically, it is a symptom of giving birth for some. It was for me! It was rough! However, I had a good support system and I knew the signs and symptoms ahead of time which helped me recognize them too.

Noticing the signs and symptoms in yourself is not always easy, but it can be hugely beneficial. Having a spouse or partner who knows you, understands the signs and symptoms, and can recognize them in you can be crucial as well. Make sure that each time you see your doctor (and even your pediatrician), you are discussing your feelings as well. They can and will help!

It can be hard to want to talk about it with anyone, even if you discussed it all while you were happy and pregnant. It can even be embarrassing, but remember that you are not the only beneficiary of getting help, that brand new bundle is too. Talk to someone, anyone. Again, you are not alone! If you don't want to talk to family or your doctor, reach out to a social media moms group (hello Moms Fit Life!). Someone is going through the same thing or has gone through it and can help today.

Other things you can do to help, bringing flowers into the home, opening windows, getting outside (even if you just sit), trying and walk a little, going for a joy ride, or trying and get to your favorite store without baby or partner and only shop for YOU! Nothing for the baby or home. If you are waiting to take the baby out, get take out. Get the comforts of things away from home that you love at home.

If you are active or want to be active there are some things you can do before you are cleared to return to exercise at the 6-week mark (although, I highly recommend getting the okay from a pelvic floor pt, not your OBGYN). There are lots of breathing exercises (that help work your core too!), they will help you relax, and bring your ribs, hips, pelvic floor and diaphragm back into place after having a baby. This is also setting you up for a stronger foundation when it is time to exercise again. Having a good understanding of proper posture while walking (both pushing a stroller and baby wearing), will help immensely too. Even though these things seem "silly" and "boring", some form of connection to your body and movement will definitely help an active person start to feel normal again and help combat the blues. Bonus, deep breathing helps calm and relax your nervous system also helping combat depression and baby blues.
